5 Native Trees That Will Thrive in Your Lancaster, PA Yard

If you’re planting a tree in Lancaster County, native species are almost always the smart choice. They’re adapted to our soil and climate, they handle local weather without much fuss, and they support the birds and pollinators that non-native ornamentals often don’t. Lancaster sits in USDA hardiness zones 6b to 7a, and the five trees below all thrive here with far less babysitting than the imported alternatives.

Why Native Trees Are Worth It

A native tree evolved in this region, which means it’s already suited to our rainfall, temperature swings, and pest pressures. That usually translates to less watering, fewer disease problems, and a longer, healthier life. The National Audubon Society keeps a searchable database of native plants that support local wildlife, and Pennsylvania’s own DCNR publishes guidance on landscaping with Pennsylvania native trees for exactly our conditions.

1. Red Maple (Acer rubrum)

A dependable, fast-establishing shade tree with brilliant red fall color. Red maple tolerates a wide range of soils, including the wetter spots many yards have, and it’s one of the most reliable natives for Lancaster landscapes. Give it room, it gets large.

2. Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

If you want spring color, this is the one. Redbud covers its bare branches in pink-purple blooms before the leaves come in, then settles into a tidy, heart-leaved understory tree. It stays modest in size, which makes it a great fit for smaller yards and spots near the house.

3. Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)

A classic Pennsylvania native with spring flowers, red fall berries that feed birds, and a graceful branching habit. Dogwood does best with some afternoon shade and well-drained soil, so tuck it at a woodland edge or on the east side of the house rather than in full, exposed sun.

4. Serviceberry (Amelanchier)

An excellent four-season small tree: white spring flowers, edible summer berries that birds love, orange-red fall color, and attractive smooth bark in winter. Serviceberry stays compact, making it one of the best natives for tight urban and suburban lots in Lancaster.

5. White Oak (Quercus alba)

For the long game, it’s hard to beat a white oak. It’s a slow, majestic grower that becomes a landmark tree and supports more wildlife than almost any other species you can plant. Penn State Extension has good tree selection and planting guidance if you want to make sure you’re matching the right oak to the right spot, because a tree this long-lived deserves a well-chosen home.

A Few Tips Before You Plant

Match the tree to the site, not the other way around. Check how much sun the spot gets, how well it drains, and how much room the tree needs at full size, including height near power lines and spread near structures. Planting the right tree in the wrong place is the most common mistake we see, and it’s the one that leads to removals a decade or two down the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lancaster County falls in USDA hardiness zones 6b to 7a, which all five of these natives handle comfortably.

Eastern redbud and serviceberry are both excellent, they stay compact, offer multiple seasons of interest, and don't demand much once established.

Early spring and fall are ideal, when temperatures are mild and the roots can establish before summer heat or winter cold. Avoid planting in the peak of summer if you can.

Generally, yes. Because they're adapted to our climate and soils, natives usually need less watering and have fewer pest and disease issues than non-native ornamentals, though every new tree needs regular watering for its first couple of years.
